General Information
Volunteers in Medicine provides the following types of care:
- Routine health screening
- Uncomplicated acute and chronic illnesses
- Preventive medicine
- Office treatable trauma
- Routine obstetrical care (less delivery)
- OB-GYN office care
- Well baby and health examinations
- Physical examinations as needed
- Geriatric care
- Minor X-ray and lab procedures
- Essential dental care for adults and children on a limited basis
- Acute treatment of and stabilization of walk-in emergencies prior to transportation to a health care facility
- Provision of medications at no cost when able

Guidelines:
All patients must meet eligibility requirements in order to see a physician. There are no walk-ins; appointments only. Please call County Services “2-1-1” or ReachOut (858) 300-1208 in order to set up an appointment. Ask for an appointment with Volunteers in Medicine.
Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for VIM SD, you must meet the following criteria:
- You or your spouse must be working
- You must be uninsured (no Medical, Medicare, or private/employer covered health insurance)
- You must reside in El Cajon or Lakeside within the following zip codes: 92019, 92020, 92021, 92040
- Your household must earn less than 200% of the federal poverty level:
1 person $19,140 per year $10.60 per hour
2 persons $25,660 per year $14.25 per hour
3 persons $32,180 per year $17.90 per hour
4 persons $38,700 per year $21.50 per hour
5 persons $45,220 per year $25.10 per hour
6 persons $51,740 per year $28.75 per hour
7 persons $58,620 per year $32.40 per hour
8 persons $64,780 per year $36.00 per hour
For each additional person add $6,520 per year
What if I don’t meet VIM’s eligibility requirements? I still can’t afford healthcare!
There are many resources available, the problem is how to find them. Reach Out exists specifically to put people in need of health care together with medical resources available to help them. Reach Out works in conjunction with 2-1-1 San Diego. You can call Reach Out by dialing 211, or by dialing (858) 300-1208.

Medi-Cal
Since Medi-Cal generally covers persons under 133% of the poverty level, VIM’s income eligibility typically covers the following income ranges:
1 person between $12,728 and $19,140
2 persons between $17,064 and $25,660
3 persons between $21,400 and $32,180
4 persons between $25,735 and $38,700
5 persons between $30,071 and $45,220
6 persons between $34,407 and $51,740
7 persons between $38,743 and $58,260
8 persons between $43,078 and $64,780
Medi-Cal requirements are detailed and specific. You can obtain help learning about Medi-Cal by calling Reach Out at (858) 300-1208. Reach Out staff can provide a referral to your closest Family Resource Center to apply for Medi-Cal if potentially eligible.
